Kinds of ART (Assisted Reproductive Technologies) and their meaning

ART (Assisted Reproductive Technologies) are modern methods and medical techniques which contribute to getting pregnant while which some or all procedures of fertilization are performed out of future mother’s organism.

Depending on the cause and severity of male/female infertility different  types of Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART) are used:

  •  Artificial (Intrauterine) Insemination (IUI) is a kind of ART while which man’s/donor’s specially refined sperm cell  is introduced to the patient’s uterus with a catheter;
  • In-vitro Fertilization (IVF) is a fertilization of female’s eggs with her husband’s/donor’s sperm in a tube. Eggs are cultivated (till a certain developmental stage) with a special medical equipment in the lab. The most viable embryos are transferred into the patient’s uterus;
  • Intra Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) is a kind of male infertility treatment using which sperm cell is introduced directly into the egg;
  • testicular sperm aspiration (TESA) is a surgical biopsy of the testis;
  • testicular sperm extraction (TESE)  is a needle biopsy of several parts of the testis;
  • egg donation is a conducted if woman can’t produce eggs on her own or there is a possibility to transfer hereditary diseases to a child;
  • sperm donation is used in the cases of serious form of male infertility or if there is a possibility of men’s complicated hereditary diseases transfer;
  • egg/ embryo freezing (vitrification) is a special program due to which your eggs (embryos) are saved and, in such a way, you can postpone your pregnancy for later on if now because of different reasons you aren’t ready to give a birth to baby but dream to do this in future.
  • PGD (Pre-Implantation genetic testing) is a special kind of ART which allows to check embryos for gender and genetic disorders;
  • surrogacy is a chance for women without uterus or those who because of health conditions are unable to get pregnant or carry a child to term on their own to have a child.

Main goal of using Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART) is the birth of a healthy child preserving mother’s health. Modern medical protocols of ART usage are aimed to reduce the period from the first consultation with a fertility specialist till the childbirth to even less than 2 years.
