Surrogacy is a kind of ART (Assisted Reproductive Treatment) according to which a gestational carrier (GC) carries a child on behalf of another couple – intended parents (spouses who because of some health problems or infertility can’t conceive and/or give birth to a child on their own).

Surrogate mother (GC) is a woman who bears a child for the infertile spouses by using IVF (in-vitro fertilization) for pay. Surrogate mother gives birth to a child.  But as she isn’t biologically connected with a baby, only intended parents are viewed as real parents of the child.

If we speak about surrogacy, we mean that the child  is “created” by using one of the most effective methods of ART – IVF (in-vitro fertilization). The key point of IVF is that the woman is stimulated by special fertility drugs to produce a number of mature eggs which then are removed from her body by the special needle and fertilized in a lab setting with her partner’s/donor’s sperm. For successful results, the embryos are cultured for 3 to 5 days, and only then 1-2 of them are transferred to the surrogate.

Despite the fact that a GC carries and gives  birth to child, only intended parents will be on the child’s birth certificate. Starting since the 4-5thmonths of pregnancy, the legal work connected with the registration of the necessary documents begins. After the child’s birth, the GC have to sign all the necessary papers which indicates her free-will agreement to register the intended parents as legal and official parents of this.

Yes, these are quite different processes. Egg donation (also known as ovum donation) is just a process of donorship. In other words, when a woman can’t produce eggs on her own, the eggs of another healthy woman (donor) are taken. They are conceived with the sperm of an  infertile patient’s husband and then the embryo is transferred to the patient’s uterus.

Of course, there are compensations for surrogate mothers. According to the surrogacy contract, at the end of the journey surrogate will be paid compulsory defined sum. Besides, each month GC gets a special maintenance.  In the cases when GC gets some complications, by all means, all the outgoing will be compensated.

It’s a pity, if you are single, you can’t use surrogacy. According to the legislation of Ukraine, only heterosexual officially married couples can take part in such a program.

It’s strictly prohibited  for same-sex couples to use surrogacy in Ukraine. Only officially married spouses (a man and a woman) can take part in the program. This is stated in the Law No. 787 from 09.09.2013 by the Ministry of Health of Ukraine.
